Perk Rookie - Week 3

Well, it's been 3 weeks and I'm still showing up to pour cups of coffee and toast bagels at Perk on Main. I have to say it's been an enlightening experience in terms of pure coffee/espresso knowledge. Having worked for that big giant coffeehouse chain based out of Washington state, I can say without hesitation that far more care and expertise go into making your cappuccinos, lattes and mochas at Perk on Main than you'll ever get going to that place with the mermaid logo. Making great espresso beverages is practically an art form at Perk. If there's any doubt about that, just take a look at the amazing "latte art" atop your beverage as Jill and Casey slide your drink across the bar to you. Then take a big sip and really, really savor what is hitting your tastebuds. Nice.

A big welcome to the other new guy at Perk on Main, Lucas, who kind of looks like Harry Connick Jr and apparently has a vast knowledge of Latin American economics.

I'll leave you with a gratuitous self-promoting plug. I write comic books. I wrote a really good one back in 2002/2003 called the forgotten. Some very cool people in Hollywood are working really hard to turn it into a movie. I'm working really hard to write a sequel to the original mini-series. The Perk Rookie - First day on the job

Hey there Perk on Main patrons. It's Jareth, the new barista at your favorite Emmaus coffee house. Not sure what she was thinking, but Jill had the crazy idea to grant me permission to be a contributing writer to the Perk blog. So, you will probably be hearing from me on a semi-regular basis.

Today was my first day on the job. Kind of surreal to be behind the counter at Perk after years of being on the other side. I remember meeting Jill the first time soon after she took over the place. I decided to give her my caramel mocha litmus test and she passed with flying colors. Soon I was "Caramel Mocha Guy" and eventually became the regular customer known as Jareth, the talkative comic writer guy who works at Rodale but might be on the the verge of a movie deal.

Well, I no longer work at Rodale, but I do have a movie deal...just no movie yet (that's a story for another post). So, while I'm waiting for my comic book series The Forgotten to hit the silver screen, I'll be working at Perk on Main with some of the nicest, coolest, most down-to-earth people I've met in the Lehigh Valley. It's a pleasure to be a part of the team. I look forward to meeting you, the Perk faithful and serving up some great coffee, making masterful espresso drinks and getting to know everyone better.

We are pleased to share the great news, the Emmaus Artisans Market has received Emmaus Borough Council approval and opening day is scheduled for Sunday, May 30th. Excitement is growing as opening day quickly approaches.

The Sunday Emmaus Artisans Market will be held from 10am to 2pm on the last Sunday of each month. The beautiful Triangle Park in historic downtown Emmaus will be the home for this open-air market. The Valley’s premier producer-only farmers’ market, The Emmaus Farmers’ Market, is located only one block from Triangle Park. Both markets will treat Sunday shoppers to a wide variety of the best local producer only goods.

The Emmaus Artisans Market will compliment a thriving Emmaus business district, celebrate the handmade local revolution and showcase talented Lehigh Valley artists.
Any interested artists are invited to complete a registration form which is available at www.emmausmainstreet.com and return no later than Thursday, May 27th for consideration. Chili Cook Off

February 12th 6pm at 332 Main Street Emmaus
Chili Entrance fee $10 – Guests $5

Two categories will be judged, “traditional meat chili” and “vegetarian chili.” One winner from each category will be selected, as well as a “people’s choice” winner acknowledged.

1. Contestants may only enter 1 batch of chili, per household to be judged. Contestants will not have access to the judging area.
2. All ingredients must be pre-cooked & treated prior to the event – chili is to be brought “ready-to-eat.” Maintenance of its proper temperature for serving is suggested by use of a crock pot. Cooking on site is not permitted.
3. Contestants and entries must be at Perk on Main by 5:45pm. Judging begins promptly at 6:00pm.
4. Each contestant must cook a minimum of two (2) quarts of competition chili. Three (3) four (4)oz containers will be presented for judging. Any additional chili will be served to the public for the “people’s choice” judging.
5. Each contestant will be assigned a “contestants number” and be given three (3) containers in which their chili will be collected at the time of the official judging. Each contestant should verify that the number on the bottom of their container is the same as their contestants’ number assigned to them. All meat entries will be numbered as follows: 1,2,3…vegetarian entries: 1v,2v,3v…
6. The decision of the judges is final. Judging will be based on score cards which are numbered.

Judging
In this competition the chili will be blind judged (no one knows the identity of the cook) and scorecards will be based on the following six characteristics: Ranked on a scale from 1-10, 10 being the highest score.

Our current location will close for business on Wednesday, January 27th to complete the transition into our new space. Although my original plan was to remain open longer, the work ahead is immense and the staff at Perk on Main wants to be ready to serve the best customers in the Lehigh Valley on the 1st of February.

Volpe’s Sports Bar Makes Contribution to the Emmaus Main Street Program

On Wednesday, August 19th, Fran Volpe, owner of Volpe’s Sports Bar, contributed financial support to the Emmaus Main Street Program using the proceeds from two recent fund raisers.

Over the past two months, patrons, employees and owners of Volpe’s Sports Bar have been vying for the title of “Volpe’s Biggest Loser” – a weight loss program to help promote healthier bodies and to also raise funds to support local non-profit organizations.

In addition to this event, Volpe’s Sports Bar raised funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, with a portion of the proceeds going to local non-profit organizations.

The Emmaus Main Street Program was pleased to learn that it had been selected as the local non-profit beneficiary and at Wednesday’s presentation, was able to express thanks and deep appreciation for this unexpected contribution.

Volpe’s Sports Bars, located at the corner of 5th & Broad Streets in Emmaus and at 19th & Tilghman Streets in Allentown, have been owned and operated by the Volpe family since 1941 and have always been a great spot for meeting friends, quenching your thirst, talking and watching sports or just kicking back. As one of the oldest sports bar, Volpe's knows how to take care of its patrons. You'll find a clean, relaxed atmosphere and terrific, finger foods, pizza, wings, sandwiches, platters, salads and much more. You'll always see major sporting events as well as local events on the big tv's. Volpe's has the latest lottery machine, CD juke box music, occasional live entertainment, ATM, pool, darts and much more.

Fran Volpe purchased the Emmaus location, formerly the Broad Street Hotel, almost two years ago with the intention of restoring the building as much as possible back to its original look and condition. “It’s going to be a long process”, noted Volpe. “There are 84 windows that need to be replaced, a sidewalk that needs to be repaired or replaced and exterior brick that needs to be re-pointed.” Volpe then added that he will take the time needed to do the job right.

The Emmaus Main Street Program, established in 1995, serves the Borough of Emmaus by helping to stimulate economic growth and stability, promoting the community beyond its borders, beautifying streets, sidewalks and facades, and increasing the quality of life for Emmaus’ businesses and residents.

The Faschnacht & Forsythia Festival is next Tuesday, February 24th, 6-9 AM (yes…AM, not PM!!) at St. John’s UCC, 139 N. 4th Street.

What a terrific way to spend a little time before work, school or play and participate in celebrating Shrove Tuesday with your friends, family and neighbors.

The F&F Festival is truly a local event. No one, anywhere, does a festival like this. Just one more reason Emmaus is looked upon as being unique…a true leader among communities!

At the festival you will find faschnachts for sale ($1 each or $11 per dozen), dipping sauces, coffee, lively music and some quirky activities. Watch the Crowning of King Faschnacht and Queen Forsythia (two upstanding Emmaus citizens) and the Knighting of the Defender of the Faschnacht. Have fun learning the Faschnacht Trot and enter the dance contest to win a prize!

Ok, so I am one of those folks who believes Valentine's Day is merely a manufactured day to boost card, flower and chocolate sales. For men it means increased stress levels as they scramble Feb. 13th at 6pm on the way home from work to find the perfect card or thoughtful gift. Women? Well we race to get our pedicures/manicures done and get the children off to the babysitters. To me, this day means stress, but to many of you, it means love and crap like that. EMMAUS TO CELEBRATE PA DUTCH TRADITION

The Emmaus Main Street Program (EMSP) is pleased to announce the return of the Faschnacht & Forsythia Festival. The festival is scheduled for Tuesday, February 24th, 6 – 9 AM at St. John’s UCC located at 139 N. 4th Street in Emmaus.

There will be a demonstration of the official “Faschnacht Trot” choreographed by Jean Oleksa, followed by a Faschnacht Trot Dance Contest. And, courtesy of the East Penn Press, we’ll have a ‘Newspaper Toss’ where you can compete in tossing a newspaper onto a mocked-up front porch.

There will be freshly made faschnachts from the Emmaus Bakery, savory dipping sauces from Perk on Main and La Belle Cuisine, and coffee from Perk On Main.

We’ll read the official 2009 Emmaus Fortune and pass out sprigs of forsythias. The drums will roll while we announce and introduce this year’s King Faschnacht and Queen Forsythia (two long standing members of the Emmaus community) and knight the Defender of the Faschnacht.

New this year is the Story Contest. Children are encouraged to submit stories no later than February 16th. Contest entrants must finish the sentence “In the little village of Emmaus, in 1759, there lived a boy named Fred Faschnacht and a girl named Fern Forsythia. They were very excited to wake up on Faschnacht Day because……..”. Winners will be announced at the festival.

There is no admission fee for the Faschnacht & Forsythia Festival. Faschnachts may be purchased at the event or pre-ordered by calling 610-965-6279. Story contest entries should be mailed to EMSP, 244 Main Street, Emmaus, PA 18049 and are due by February 16th.

It is with great sadness that I write this entry. Devon leaves us next week to begin her journey at Temple. Quickly becoming a vital member of my staff, Devon put all my fears concerning hiring summer staff to rest. Even arriving her first day on time! For those of you not familiar with past history, I have no tolerance for lateness, and it seemed as though every new hire was disregarding that policy their first day. Let’s just say, some were calling me Donald, “Your Fired!”

Devon has been a blessing. Giving me some much needed time to focus on the business and even some summer R&R time with my girls. She is a daily breath of fresh air. When asked how she is? “Awesome!” always replies Devon followed by a huge smile. So refreshing, it was contagious. She brought even more laughter to our days. That’s huge, laughter in my shop is vital. My hope is that our coffee and laughter can be a part of making our guests’ day a little brighter, maybe better, and Devon was certainly a part of that.

Guests enjoyed her youthful perspective, I her energy, positive outlook and willingness to learn. I am confident that Devon will accomplish all she sets out to and touch so many more the same way she has touched us.

Before the shop my days were almost predictable. Same routine, faces, and schedule. Now predictable only shows itself when guests like "MC Hammer" come in for their cup of wake me up the same time every day. Each day now brings a different routine, new faces, first experiences and most importantly, exciting new coffees.

Before making the switch recently to Counter Culture Coffee we served a guest favorite, Italian Roast, from our previous coffee roasters. Predicting with certainty many would select this bold yet silky sweet coffee meant any other selection was overlooked. One guest describing her coffee experience as, "a kick ass love making session but with cuddling afterwards, and you get to go back for seconds."

This guest asks weekly if I will ever bring it back. My answer is the same, "I serve Counter Culture Coffee now so I can promise better; a kick ass love making session, cuddling afterwards, seconds, he calls the next day, and takes out the trash!" I keep my promises...Sumatra Gayo

August, the month of firsts. After many requests, Perk on Main has now entered the blogging world. Writing is not a favorite past time of mine, so I make a few promises, short and sweet, in keeping with the spirit of the shop sometimes dirty, and to write mostly about coffee and the community.

First Fashion Show! Don't worry folks, I will not be modeling. On August 31st a fall fashion show is being held to benefit small, independently owned businesses from the Sustainable Business Network of the Lehigh Valley. The Emmaus Farmers’ Market, Pachacuti fair trade jewelry and accents (pachacutionline.com) and The Perk on Main will be hosting the event. Featured on the runway will be professional models by Image International, as well as student models from Emmaus High School. A talent scout from Image International will be on hand to consult with potential candidates for future shows and professional careers in modeling. The network recently launched a "THINK INDEPENDENT" campaign to stress the importance of buying locally and supporting small, independently owned businesses. Posters of network members advertising their goods and services can be readily seen in many store windows in downtown Bethlehem, Emmaus, and throughout the Lehigh Valley. It’s time to "THINK INDEPENDENT" and get personal with the people in your neighborhood! Come out on August 31st with your lawn chairs and support your local farmers and boutiques. Don’t forget! Coffee Cupping! This is by far my most exciting first yet. For those of you unfamiliar with the term cupping, think wine tasting. This has been an awesome experience for me and I can't wait to share it with everyone. It has taken my coffee experience to a whole new level of enjoyment. Adding to the Month of Firsts theme, I thought I would pass this one along. A guest that will remain nameless (you know who you are doll baby!) recently asked Christi and I to keep our eyes peeled for a suitable companion for her. Being that I spend nearly every waking hour at the shop, and spend most of that time on the extraction of or receiving end of personal information, I could see why in her eyes I would make a suitable match maker. We took this intriguing concept one step further. Speed & Speed, the idea that we could pair caffeine addicted, love starved singles with the opportunity to meet one another was brilliant! Coffee meet speed dating. And so, a new first is born. Speed dating at Perk on Main....date coming soon. And folks, for the record, this is the cleaned up version of how this story unfolded.
